Our Faith Community
Unitarian Universalism is a liberal religion. We believe personal experience, conscience and reason are final authorities in religious matters. We put religious insights to the test of our hearts and minds. We uphold a free search for truth. We are not bound to any fixed statement of belief.
The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Bennington is "non-creedal." There is no "test of fellowship." We come together in a search for meaning.
In that search, we recognize that answers to religious questions cannot be finally known. We continually ask questions such as: Is there a God? Who is Jesus? What is the meaning of life? What is good? What is evil? What happens when we die?
In seeking our own answers to these questions, we acknowledge that our religious companions may hold answers quite different from our own. Also, our present beliefs may change as we change and grow.
This does not mean we can believe anything we wish. There are limits. These limits are not theological, but ethical. They are named in our purposes and principles, printed in the front of our hymnal. Someone may, or may not, believe in a God. But, a belief that God holds some folks superior to others is not welcome in our community, for it is not in keeping with our purposes and principles.
We are self-governing. We adopt our own by-laws, raise our own funds, select our own leaders, and build our own budget. An elected Board of Trustees conducts the business of the Fellowship. We are all stewards of our Fellowship.
There are two reasons to join with us. First, you want to help shape its future by your vote and participation. Second, you want to support its livelihood and vitality.
WELCOME!
The Rev. Will Saunders
